Ethan - 7 Months

My mom and sister came for a quick visit last Sunday and it was so nice having them in town, even if it was just for the afternoon. It hasn't even been a month since my trip to Raleigh, but Ethan has changed so much in that short period of time and they were having fun watching all of his new tricks. My mom was content to just watch Ethan play (which he does all the time these days!) His favorite toy right now is his ring stacking toy. He loves to take off each of the rings and then grasp one in each hand while banging on anything in sight. He also trys to chew on the actual post that the rings stack on, although that doesn't hold his attention for more than a few minutes. He continues to play with his sillytown (video coming soon...promise) and has figured out that there is one character on wheels. He flips that one over and turns the wheels over and over again. He has a train toy that he does the same thing with. He is all boy already - facscinated with cars and rolling the wheels around. Hopefully I'll be able to keep up with our adventures into the land of little boys because this is a whole new world for this girly girl who grew up with two sisters, female cousins, aunts, etc. etc.

Ethan is in love with his Aunt Carolyn. Since she doesn't live too far away we've been able to get together about once a month and he goes right to her. Ethan doesn't have stranger anxiety too badly yet, but he does get a little anxious with both sets of grandparents. Carolyn is really good with him and it is so nice getting to watch their special bond develop. We always had a special relationship with my mom's sister, and to watch my sister and son in the same way makes my heart so happy. Ethan is one lucky little boy, because he has an extended family that loves him so very much.

On Sunday evening Patrick, Ethan and I drove up to the Great Wolf Lodge because my in-laws were staying there with our nephews for the night. My mother and father-in-law take their three grandsons (Ethan's cousins) each year and since it is only a 25 minute drive or so we usually go up to have dinner with them and hang out for a little while. I had so much fun seeing the boys. I only get to see them a couple times a year and they are such sweet kids. Ben, the youngest, is five and he told me that he wanted to marry me again. (He told me this several times at Thanksgiving too.) He's too young to quite understand what that means, but to know that he loves his Aunt Melanie is pretty cool. I got to hang out with the older boys for awhile in their cabin, and it was fun chatting about all the happenings in their lives. Bailey kept telling me that he really wants a girl cousin and that I need to have another baby soon. While I would love to another, I think it's way too soon to be having that conversation. I need to at least get Ethan sleeping through the night first :)

Speaking of sleep, Ethan finally started sleeping for 11-12 hour stretches for a blissful week and I foolishly thought that we were done with the middle of the night wakeup calls. Alas, I think that teething has begun and there was one night this past week where he woke up 7 or 8 times and seemed to be in a lot of pain. I ended up giving him a very small amount of generic infant Tylenol (who knew that the real stuff was no longer available?!) and that seemed to help. He's been a lot better since that night, but still wakes up/makes noise about once a night (usually when he has managed to creep to the top of his crib and realizes that he can't scoot up any further.) If we hear him start whining when this happens and we're able to get there fast enough, we can pull him back down to the bottom of his crib and he will stay asleep during this process. If we're not fast enough, the whining will wake him up and then he'll be awake for anywhere from 5-30 minutes. He is such a mover and a shaker - always on the go these days.

Ethan continues to roll anywhere and everywhere to get where he wants to go. If he sees a toy that is out of reach he will lay down and then roll over to retrieve it. He also moves like an inchworm a lot too...he'll put his butt up in the air and then flatten out, making minimal forward progress. He'll keep doing this until he figures out that rolling will get him there a lot faster and then he'll commence rolling.

Ethan has shortened the length of his naps, and now only naps for a little under three hours a day. His morning nap usually lasts about an hour and a half and his afternoon nap lasts about an hour and 15 minutes. (This child is nothing if not consistent!) I work for the vast majority of Ethan's naptime during the day (and most evenings during the week as well.) Since the weather has been so much nicer lately, Ethan and I have resumed our daily walks in his stroller. I forgot how much I enjoyed taking a daily walk with Ethan - I love it! I've also taken him over to our neighborhood playground a few time. I wish it had baby swings, because I think Ethan would really enjoy them. Since there are no baby swings, I sit with Ethan in my lap and swing. It brings back lots of memories of childhood for me to just sit and swing. Life is pretty good if this is how I get to spend my days!

Earlier today I started this season of consignment shopping. This sale had a strict no stroller policy and since Patrick works on weekends I had to bring Ethan along with me. I was pretty nervous about how Ethan would behave, but I strapped him into his Baby Bjorn and he thought it was the best thing ever. He loved looking around at all the other babies in their carriers (thank goodness I wasn't the only one who was walking around wearing my child!) and for a mere $25 I came home with shorts, overalls, shirts, pajamas and two new toys. (Name brand stuff too - I love these sales!) After disinfecting the tap-a-tune toy like crazy I presented it to Ethan who immediately started banging away on the keys. It's fun watching Ethan love all these musical toys (his drum, the little piano, takealong tunes, etc.) There is zero musical ability with Patrick and I, and probably won't be any with Ethan if genetics has anything to say about it, but for this moment in time he is a mini musician.

I'll try to upload a bunch of pictures in the next day or two, so stay tuned. In the interim, happy seven month birthday to my precious little angel. I love him more and more each day, and I am truly blessed to be his mommy. I can't believe that it's already been seven months since the day that we welcomed Ethan into our lives. Every detail of that day is so vivid in my memory and I can't believe how much Ethan has grown and changed in such a relatively short period of time. I am so lucky to have Ethan as my son :)

Ethan - A Few Quick Videos

So I tried to load the video clips directly into the blog, and surprise, surprise I ran into some technical difficulties so I had to load the clips into YouTube instead. Here are some links to check out Ethan's latest and greatest moments (and I set these as unlisted in YouTube so they're not public, but if you have the link you should be able to view them without a problem - let me know if you can't see them though!)

Ethan - Month 6, Week 3

This has been a busy week! I've had several work projects, but I'm finding a better balance so I think I'm starting to finally figure out to handle working from home part time and being a full time mommy without totally stressing myself out. I managed to come down with a nasty cold so I've been getting over that this week...no fun!
Have I mentioned on here that Ethan is sitting up on his own yet? I don't think I have, but he's been sitting independently for about two weeks now. He still manages to tip over pretty easily so I usually make sure that I'm behind him to keep him from crashing while he's playing, but he's getting better and better at it. His favorite toys right now are his sillytown from his Aunt Stacy and Uncle Brian and his learn and groove drum. I'll have to post a video of him playing with his sillytown because he bangs all the characters together. He is all boy these days - he loves to bang on everything. When I noticed that this was one of his favorite activities I brought out his drum and you would think that I had given him the moon. He was in love! (My mom got him the drum for Christmas but he wasn't too interested in it right away so I put it away for awhile and now he thinks this thing is the best toy ever.)
This past weekend my cousin Suzanne came to town so Ethan and I got to go meet her for the afternoon. She was such a natural with Ethan. He loved meeting her too (even though I'm pretty sure he drooled all over her!) Ethan and I also went to visit my friends Jennifer and Renae who were selling Girl Scout cookies with their little girls. All five Daisy scouts were looking in at Ethan at once and I think it overwhelmed him because my non-crying child let out a wail. He stopped right away, but it was pretty funny. There will come a day that he will think that five older women saying how cute he is would be a dream come true, but this was evidently not that day. Today Ethan and I went to the greenway with my friend Rebecca and her dog Massimo (my "nephew" since I have known him since he as a puppy too young to leave his mama and that was at least four years ago.) Ethan was fascinated watching Massimo for a few minutes and then fell asleep for the remainder of his stroll.
The kitties are all doing well. Rocky has recovered from having five (yes, five!) teeth extracted and the other cats have finally welcomed him back into their crew. (I guess he smelled like the vet's office or something for the first couple of days because they didn't want to have anything to do with him for awhile.) Caddy continues to hang out with Ethan and I all day, every day and Spot and Holly are content to sleep the day away and play with Patrick and I in the evenings once Ethan has gone to sleep. I know four sounds like a lot (and it is!) but fortunately our feline family are the sweetest, most playful, loving little animals in the world and I know that we were meant to rescue each one of these little nuts.
As promised, here are a few pictures from the past week. I have a couple of video clips I'm going to try to get loaded on here soon too. Cross your fingers that this techically challenged individual can figure it all out!
Ethan LOVES prunes!!!
What a mess...prunes were by far the messiest food (and that's saying something considering he's had bright green peas now too)
Ethan finally got to meet our cousin Suzanne this weekend. She was so sweet with him! Ethan loves his cousins so much - Suzanne's sister Anna has a beautiful singing voice and Ethan loved listening to her sing to him. If only they lived closer!!!
His new favorite toy - he will bang on this drum and laugh and laugh
They don't look at all alike, huh?!
Do you see Caddy :)
I was being silly with Ethan - we have so much fun together each day!

Ethan - Month 6, Week 2

This has been a great week in Ethan news. The other day I said "hi" to Ethan and all of a sudden he tried to say it right back - he has started trying to mimic me! His version of "hi" wasn't quite the same as mine, but it was definitely an attempt to make the same sound that he had just heard. He's done it a few times since, but only with the word "hi." (If only I could get him to do it with mama!)

Ethan got to eat prunes for the first time this week and you would have thought that I was giving him the most delicious food in the entire world. He kept making yum sounds and reaching for the spoon. This child LOVES to eat prunes. I dare say that they are his favorite food....ever! I took several pictures and a little video clip of him eating prunes which I'll try to get posted here in the next day or so.

Ethan is still rolling everywhere, but he's also started to creep on his tummy just a bit. He doesn't get up on all fours so it's definitely not a crawl, but when he is laying on his tummy he's started inching forward (kind of like an army crawl if you will.) He doesn't get too far with this move yet and still uses rolling to get across the room, but I'm a little afraid that he's going to get this creeping (or crawling) thing down in the not too distant future and then he'll be on the move. Yikes!

I've been busy with another work project the past several days so I have once again resorted to working every spare minute until I fall into bed at night. I'm working on finding a better balance, because to say that I am exhausted is putting it mildly. I really enjoy the work that I'm doing, but I think I need to be realistic about how much work I am able to take on while being a full time stay at home mommy. It is a definite adjustment for this former workaholic!

Our little Rocky had to have several teeth extracted today. Poor little guy looks pretty pitiful now that he is home and I can't wait until he is feeling better. I realize that I haven't been posting much about the kitties lately, so I'll try to put a post about them together here sometime soon. They're all doing well (aside from poor Rocky needing to have his teeth cleaned and pulled!) and each has their own little relationship with Ethan. (Speaking of which, he loves his cats so much - he gets the biggest smile whenever they come near him. He did pull Caddy's fur once, but she dealt with it like a champ and I gave her some special cuddles for being such a trooper.)

Weekend in Cary

This past weekend Ethan and I took a little roadtrip together and went to stay with my sister and her husband in Cary. I was very nervous about this trip since Patrick had to stay home and work (the downside of having a husband who is a golf pro is that he is crazy busy on the weekends!) Ethan and I left on Saturday morning and I tried to time up our departure so that he would be ready for a nap about the time we hit the road. On the way there he was awake but quietly playing with his toys for the first 30 minutes or so and then he drifted off to dream land. I did need to do the "mom move" and reach behind me into the car seat to retrieve a fallen pacifier once, but as soon as the paci was safely back in his mouth (how I've learned to do this is beyond me - it truly is a mom thing!) he slept soundly until we were about 10 minutes away from my sister's house (shortly after we passed the exit for my mom's house, ironically enough.) I had planned to take Ethan up for a visit with my aunt and cousins over the Christmas break, but his trip to the ER derailed all my plans so this was our first mommy & Ethan trip. This was a pretty quick trip, so I didn't get to see very many people this time, but next time I'm in town I plan to stay for a few more days so that I get the chance to visit with everybody back home.

It was so nice getting to spend some time with my sister. Her husband was suffering from a sinus infection so I felt badly descending upon their home with a baby, but we tried to stay on the go as much as possible so as not to bother him too much. On Sunday we met up with my friend Lindsay and her little boy Graham at the park. It was so good to see Lindsay again. Graham is so cute - he has this thick dark hair that has grown like crazy since the last time I saw him...not even a month ago! Ethan's hair is growing, but he's got nothing on Graham. I also got to see Lindsay's new ride - she joined the ranks of the mini van mamas. I have to say, I was very impressed when I saw it (but no, I do not want a van of my own. I served my time in high school, thank you very much!)

At the park Ethan and Graham made a new friend, Max. Ethan is 6 months, Graham is 8 months, and their new friend Max was 7 months, although you would never know it by looking at him. This child has SIX teeth, was crawling, and was a bundle of energy. I always thought Ethan was pretty energetic, but he was calm compared to this little guy. It was so cute seeing the three little boys "playing" together. They all liked standing by these little plastic steps and hanging on. Ethan kept putting his hands in the dirt and then trying to put them in his mouth. My germ freak tendancies kicked in and I kept trying to keep his hands out of his mouth, and then realized that this was a losing proposition and gave in. Of course I didn't think to bring my camera with me, but Carolyn and Lindsay had theirs so I'm hoping to see pictures sometime soon. Ethan also had his first experience in a swing. He wasn't too sure what to make of it though, and looked pretty confused. Hopefully he'll learn to like it sometime soon, because I plan to take him to the playground a bunch when the weather starts getting warmer.

Ethan has been trying more new foods (every 4 days, that is!) He now has had bananas, apples, sweet potatoes, and carrots in addition to his rice cereal. I'm not sure if we're going to try squash or prunes next. Planning out his foods has definitely made me think twice about my diet and thinking about introducing some new fruits and vegetables into my daily routine.

The rest of our visit flew by and Monday morning Ethan and I were off to make the return trip to Charlotte. He stayed awake for the first 20 minutes or so just playing with his toys and rattles, and fell asleep again and did not wake up until we were turning into my neighborhood. I was so scared about the drive but he did really well! I wish his sleeping while we were on the road was better, but this child knows that the pack n play is not his crib and he LOVES to scratch the sides and play. It was definitely not the most restful two nights of sleep I've ever had, but now that we are back home he is back into his normal routine. Hopefully I'll have some pics to share from our weekend adventure sometime soon.
