Week 32

Less than two months to go - can you believe it?! We had a doctor's appointment this past Friday and everything went well. All measurements and his heartbeat are normal, which is always a relief to hear. I am having a fairly uneventful pregnancy thus far, which is definitely a good thing.

Patrick and I started our childbirth classes this week as well. We didn't get a ton out of the first class, but I think that I would definitely be stressed out thinking about what we were missing if we didn't attend classes. The best part of the class (although I'm not sure how helpful this will actually be when the real time comes) was laying down on our blankets and pillows while the instructor went through a relaxation exercise. We had to envision ourselves on the beach while some soothing music played. I almost fell asleep! Of course, on the way home Patrick told me that instead of telling me to visualize myself on the beach he is going to talk about memorable Panthers plays, discuss the draft, and perhaps throw in some Duke basketball talk for good measure. While I am a huge sports fan, I'm not sure that is exactly what I'll need when the time comes. I'm a little nervous now... :) We also got to watch two birth videos. They weren't quite as gross as I thought they would be, but I'm glad to have them over with. In talking to a lot of the other expectant moms, I realized just how fortunate I've been to not have to deal with so many of the yucky pregnancy side effects that exist. One girl has had horrific heartburn and another has been dealing with a lot of swelling. I hope my good luck continues because they both sounded pretty miserable!

I did manage to do something pretty stupid this week. When I went in for my last regularly scheduled dental exam a few months ago, my dentist mentioned that I had an existing filling that was in need of repair but it was not an emergency or anything and it would be fine to wait until after the baby was born to have the filling repaired. Leave it to me to manage to break the filling this week and chip a hole in the top left corner of one of my molars! Fortunately it was only part of the filling that broke off and therefore I'm not in any real pain (aside from the cut in my tongue that has developed from hitting the now jagged edge of my tooth) since no nerves were exposed or anything. I got clearance from my doctor at Friday's appointment to go ahead and have the filling repaired now (it would be a long two months if I had to wait!) and so I'll go in on Wednesday to have this thing fixed. What a pain!

I have a baby shower this coming Saturday here in Charlotte and I am so excited to get to see everybody! My mom and sister are going to spend the weekend here with me so I'm really looking forward to having some quality time together too. I'll definitely post some pictures next week.

Here's the official word on week 32: "By now your baby weighs 3.75 pounds (pick up a large jicama) and is about 16.7 inches long, taking up a lot of space in your uterus. You're gaining about a pound a week and roughly half of that goes right to your baby. In fact, he'll gain a third to a half of his birth weight during the next seven weeks as he fattens up for survival outside the womb."

Breakfast Event

Okay, so I know that I promised to use this blog to keep the outside world updated on all things baby, but I need to take a break today and vent about a most unpleasant experience from this morning that really bugged me. Let me preface this by saying that mean people really do suck!

Following our uneventful doctor's appointment this morning, Patrick and I drove across the street to have a quick breakfast together at Chick-fil-A. We've made this kind of a tradition following each appointment, and have even gotten to know a few of the very kind and friendly people working there. (I truly heart Chick-fil-A - I could probably write an entire blog post about just how much I love this place, its people, its food, its corporate culture, etc.) But I digress...

So Patrick and I park our car in a space directly opposite from the entrance, and there is a line of cars for the drive thru wrapped around the building. (This fact will become important in just a minute.) We cross over the regular lane for traffic when this van comes careening towards us in the drive thru lane. No, she does not stop for pedestrians who I thought should get the right of way, nor does she seem to care that there is a car directly in front of her so she's not really going to get much past the entrance door anyway. (Plus, we were actually proceeding before her approach, but I'll let that point pass for now.) I look up in shock, and Patrick and I then proceed to continue our trek in front of her van and into the restaurant. At this point I hear a loud "I'm sorry" and turn around because I thought she was talking to us for almost running us down. Oh no, that would require a little class. What I see is a morbidly obese woman (which ordinarily I wouldn't pass judgement on, but this woman does not deserve such an exemption) with her cell phone in one hand and a large cigarette dangling between her fingers in the other hand with all her windows rolled down. She then proceeds to LOUDLY tell the person on the other end of the phone conversation, "I'm sorry, these idiots think they are too good to walk behind my car!" Ummm, excuse me??? She was at this point parked directly in front of the entrance to the restaurant so we had to either divert ourselves in front of her or redirect ourselves behind her car and never in a million years have I seen someone behave like this. What an absolute loser! What really gets me about this, is that I make a point to be friendly to everybody around, and even engaged the cashier in a conversation about his upcoming vacation. There's a sweet older man who we see all the time too, who recognized us and usually asks how the appointment went. I am not used to being disliked by strangers, so this definitely rattled me.

So, that was my vent for today. I could have engaged this woman with a really mean retort about how nasty I think smoking is, or how in her morbidly obese state she probably shouldn't be opting for fast food for breakfast (and I do realize that in my large pregnant state that would be the pot calling the kettle black) but instead I just shook my head and went inside hoping against hope that one day she sees the error of her extremely rude ways. Oh, and maybe hoping just a little that somebody rear ended her on the way home :)

Week 31

This has been a fairly uneventful week compared to last week. We've been working some in the nursery to get everything organized and I am proud to announce that everything is put away in its place and the chaos that you saw in last week's post is no more. We also got the curtains and wooden letters up on the wall (pictures below.) There's still a lot to do to get it all ready, but it is definite progress. We've also been working on assembling a few baby related items. Below are some pictures of Patrick putting together the stroller. What a project! He did have some tiny little helpers, but I think they only slowed everything down. Poor kitties! They were really involved at first though. We also got the high chair assembled, but alas I didn't take any pictures of that endeavor. Aside from starting to get these kinds of things ready for Ethan's arrival, it has been a pretty quiet week.

Ethan has become much more active during the days and he moves around a lot. It's really kind of gross, but my stomach is visibly moving a lot in the afternoons now. Fortunately only Patrick has seen it do that (that I'm aware of anyway!) but it still kind of freaks me out. I'm glad to know that he's doing well in there, but watching your stomach move all on its own is a strange, strange thing. Patrick called me "Jiffy Pop" the other day!

We start our childbirth classes this week. I'm not sure how I feel about attending though. I know in theory it is much better to be prepared and know what to expect, but I think I'm only going to stress out about everything that we learn. When the time comes for Ethan to arrive I'll have no choice but to power through it, so I think ignorance may be bliss in this case. I'll let you know how it all goes!

Notice all of the kitty "helpers" that got involved in the assembly of the stroller
Patrick was really serious...I couldn't get him to pose!
Now only Holly is left to help her daddy
The wheels are still on the floor!
Finally...a fully functioning stroller
The curtains and curtain rod are up in the nursery

The wooden letters for one wall of the nursery (his crib will eventually go in the space underneath, but since we don't have it home yet the pack n play is serving as a place holder for the time being)

Baby Shower in Cary - Some Pictures

The cake - it matches our nursery theme!

The presents - everybody was so generous and it was definitely overwhelming

The flowers and party favors (Lindsay made the chocolate covered pretzels herself...she should start a business because they were beautiful and everybody kept asking her where she bought them!)

My sister Carolyn, my cousin Suzanne and me posing

Family pic - Carolyn, mom, me and Aunt Susie looking on

Sigma Kappa girls - me, Tracey, Meredith, Sarah

Cookie jar toy from Bethany - the toys kept us entertained for hours later that night

Boppy from Jennifer (I had tried explaining what this was to my mom before so it was nice to be able to show her what this actually is!)

Ethan's original nickname "Peanut" on a personalized onesie from Carolyn

Personalized taggie from Sarah

Sorority family pic - Tracey, me, Sarah and introducing Mary Grace (how cute are her socks?!)

The bump pic - me (30 weeks) and Lindsay (36 weeks)

The nursery is officially a disaster - how will we ever organize all of this?!

Baby Shower in Cary

What an absolutely wonderful weekend! The baby shower was held this past weekend and I'm going to do my best to describe everything that was there. I gave my camera to my cousin Suzanne to capture different moments during the shower, and I'll try to post some of the pictures here shortly as well.

The baby shower was so much more than I ever could have imagined, and Carolyn, Lindsay and Sarah really went out of their way to make this the most perfect event. The shower was held at Biaggi's restaurant in Cary, which is the same place Patrick and I had our rehearsal dinner before our wedding four years ago. The room was beautiful and the girls decorated it with flowers and balloons. Lindsay made the party favors which were chocolate covered pretzel sticks and she could really start a side business selling them because everybody wanted to know where she got them. We were treated to Biaggi's always exceptional food and then the cake came from Blue Moon Bakery. It was so cute - it matched our nursery theme with an elephant on top and the colors matched exactly as well.

It was really nice to have a shower full of close family and friends. In attendance were my sister Carolyn, my mom, my mother-in-law Chris, my sister-in-law Stacy, my Aunt Susie, my cousin Suzanne, my big sister from the sorority Sarah, my grandbig sister from the sorority Tracey, my good friend from college Lindsay, my good friend from college Meredith, my former co-worker and friend Susan, my mom's best friend Jennie, my mom's oldest friend Nancy and me. We had a great time!

When we sat down the hostesses passed around a bottle full of M&Ms and we had to guess how many were actually in the bottle. I was feeling pretty confident about my guess, until the winner was announced...Susan guessed 310 and there were actually 305! She works a lot of trade shows and evidently that experience has paid off because she was so close to the actual number. Sarah then very casually (ha!) picked up a basket full of baby goodies that had been sitting next to the cake on the cake table and walked around the table where we were all seated with it in her arms. (She was super subtle - just kidding!) We then all had a piece of paper on which we had to jot down as many items from the basket as we could remember. Susan's trade show experience came in handy yet again because she won that game as well. I think Tracey was a close second in that game.

After we ate an amazing lunch, it was time for presents. All I can say is wow - everybody was so generous and I cannot believe all the things that were given to our little guy. He has a room full of goodies already, and he's not even here yet! I'll post pictures of some of the gifts when I post the pictures separately, but it was truly overwhelming. While I was opening gifts, every guest was given a bingo card with various baby items listed and if I opened a gift with the item they could mark the appropriate square. Stacy came up as the big winner in that game. After games it was time for cake (yummy - it was so good!) and then it was time to try to load all the gifts up into my car. Believe it or not, I was able to get everything home to Charlotte but seeing through my back window was a challenge throughout the drive.

It was so nice to be able to celebrate Ethan with this wonderful group and it meant so much to be able to spend such a wonderful afternoon together. It makes it seem that much more real that Ethan really is going to be here before I know it. Yikes!!

Week 30

I am so excited - this weekend is our first baby shower!!! I can't believe that it's already time for this. I cannot wait to see our family and friends that are coming in from out of town to help celebrate little Ethan. I'll be driving to Raleigh later this afternoon, but Patrick is staying home this weekend to enjoy some much needed quiet time without a "honey do" list. This shower is being held at the same restaurant where Patrick and I had our rehearsal dinner before our wedding 4 years ago, which makes it even more special. I'll try to post pictures as soon as I get back to Charlotte next week.

We've gotten a few baby gifts in the mail, and the funniest story involves the Diaper Champ that Patrick's aunts sent us. Patrick read the instruction manual, inspected every inch of the contraption, and declared that it is a fancy trash can. Technically he is correct, but this fancy trash can will be invaluable in saving us trips outside to the dumpster to dispose of Ethan's smelly diapers. He hadn't seen one of these before and once I explained how it worked I think he was excited about it too, but we both realized that our lives are changing a bunch when we get really excited about things that can eliminate diaper stink. What is happening to us?!

I had a doctor's appointment this morning and everything went well. The only real concern (and the doctor was not at all concerned, but I am worrying about everything these days) was that I didn't gain any weight this time. It could easily be attributed to the fact that our appointment was at 8:00 am so I hadn't really eaten much for the day yet (since Patrick and I always grab either breakfast or lunch together after our appointments) or the fact that since it's been so hot out (LOVE IT!) I was wearing very light weight clothing. In any event, according to the scale at home I did gain some since our last appointment and the doctor assured me I'm on schedule and some weeks there will be a much larger gain than anticipated so not to worry. The official count is still 16 pounds, but I think it's really more like 18. We'll see what happens when I go back in two weeks. Fingers crossed there will be a larger weight gain at that appointment. (This sounds so backwards - remind me of this moment in a few months when I am struggling to shed all these extra pounds!)

I had a yucky cold a little over a week ago that has left behind a residual cough that is driving me nuts. Since I am pregnant there isn't too much I can take or do about the cough, so I'm trying not to let it drive me bonkers. The doctor checked me today and once again assured me that I am fine, not contagious, and it just might take me longer than normal to shake the cough since I have to just let it run its course. Joyous fun!

I'm starting to experience some of the not so fun side effects of being pregnant, although I have to confess that overall pregnancy is so much easier than I ever anticipated. I've been very lucky this whole time, so if I'm only now starting to have some of these symptoms I really have no room to complain. I have pretty much been sleeping like a champion throughout the pregnancy, until about 5 days ago when I woke up around 2 am to use the bathroom. I didn't think much about it until it happened the next night, and then the next. Yes, I am now up at 2 am every morning because Ethan is laying on my bladder. On the bright side, NKOTB has a song on their "The Block" album entitled 2 in the Morning so I think of them every time I'm up :) I'm also still getting leg cramps first thing in the morning, but this is very common so I'm not too worried.

I'm sure that I'll have much more to post after the baby shower (and hopefully have lots and lots of pictures!) so I'll keep this post pretty brief. Here's the official update on Week 30: "Your baby's about 15.7 inches long now, and weighs almost 3 pounds (like a head of cabbage). A pint and half of amniotic fluid surrounds him, but that volume will decrease as he gets bigger and takes up more room in your uterus. His eyesight continues to develop, though it's not very keen; even after he's born he'll keep his eyes closed for a good part of the day. When he does open them he'll respond to changes in light but will have 20/400 vision - which means he can only make out objects a few inches from his face."

Week 29

I PASSED!!!! I do not have to go in for the 3 hour glucose test since I was lucky enough to pass this test the first time through. This came as a shock to me since the doctor took one look at my chart, saw my family history of diabetes, and promptly told me not to worry about coming in for the follow up test. I just assumed I would have to come back, so this is a great surprise. Pass the cake, ice cream, and any other sweets you can think of!!

Patrick and I celebrated our fourth wedding anniversary this week as well. I cannot believe that it has been that long already. It certainly does not feel like we've been married for four years. I wonder if I'll still be saying that when we hit 20 years?! Caddy decided that shredding the card I put out on Patrick's nightstand (so he would see it first thing when he woke up) was a good plan and so yet another card in our house has her teeth marks in it. She loves to turn all things paper into confetti at night. We can't leave out newspapers, magazines, coupons - pretty much anything paper. She's a nut! Patrick surprised me with a new raincoat and he got a new lawnmower. Boy aren't we exciting?! Both of these were definite necessities that we had been putting off, so that made it nice. (Although I remember the days of flowers and jewelry fondly...haha!) It was fun remembering our favorite parts of our wedding, some of our early dates, and talking about our plans for the future.

This past weekend I got to attend another baby shower for my good friend, Lindsay. We are both expecting our first child (and both boys - thank goodness somebody else will be navigating through this brave new world with me!) so it's been a lot of fun to get to share the joys (and pains!) of pregnancy together. We are only due six weeks apart so every time Lindsay shares a new symptom, a few weeks later I am right where she was. It's been great to have a pregnancy "tour guide" and I will be lost once she has her little boy and I still have another six weeks to go until Ethan arrives. Here are a few pictures of us from her shower:

Check out our growing bellies - it's craziness!

In nursery news, we FINALLY got started on turning what was my office until a functional nursery. I took it upon myself to tape off the entire room, put down the plastic drop sheet, remove all the outlet covers, and take down the curtains and drapery rod on Sunday afternoon. (Whew, the prep work might take longer than the actual painting!) I'm not allowed to help paint (although everything I've read indicates that as long as the room is well ventilated you are allowed to paint - Patrick just doesn't seem to agree!) so at least this way I feel like I really contributed something to this process. And it has definitely been a process! We're almost done with the paint project, so here are some pictures to show you the progress:

Yes, I'm already taking a break from all the taping (and Spot & Caddy are keeping my company)

This is why we call her "Caddy Cuddles" - she loves to sit right by head no matter where I'm sitting!

Check out all of my hard work...it might not look like much but this seriously took me a couple of hours to do

This picture makes the room look REALLY blue, but I promise it's actually pretty subtle

Here's the official update for week 29: "Your baby now weighs 2 1/2 pounds (like a butternut squash) and is a tad over 15 inches long from head to heel. His muscles and lungs are continuing to mature, and his head is growing bigger to make room for his developing brain. To meet his increasing nutritional demands, you'll need plenty of proteins, vitamins C, iron and folic acid. Because his bones are soaking up lots of calcium, be sure to drink your milk (or find another good source of calcium, such as cheese, yogurt, or enriched orange juice.) This trimester, about 250 milligrams of calcium are deposited in your baby's hardening skeleton each day."
